Cover Reveal: The Breaking of Bonds (Bad Blood #2) by Alina Popescu

The Breaking of Bonds Cover Reveal

Synopsis

A human sacrifice throws vampires of two worlds, trueborn and baseborn, into an escalating conflict. One side pushes for revenge, the other for freedom. The trueborns stubbornly hunt for Anthony and Louis, pushed by Hesrah’s desire to avenge her human best friend, Alexa. The baseborns are divided between rallying with those challenging the rule of Ankhsis and obeying the trueborns.
What emerges from the portal between Earth and Ankhsis in the middle of the turmoil rocking both worlds is more dead than alive. Neither human, nor baseborn, and certainly not trueborn. This new being will either damn them all or be their race’s most powerful weapon. Will they trust it not to destroy them, or will Ankhsis decide putting it down is the only solution?
In the end, who is guilty? Who will pay? Will anyone survive its wrath?

Excerpt

Hesrah was growing impatient; she wanted to return to the portal, so she decided she needed to push them to finally share their information with her.
“What is it that you have discovered that needed my immediate attention?”
Anhubis took out an envelope from the inside pocket of his jacket and threw it on the table. She reached out to it and found a few photos in it. Louis, strapped down to a chair, all bloody and beaten. Good for him!
“What is this?” she asked, looking at Anhubis from under knitted eyebrows.
“One of our baseborn friends – we still have a few of those – followed Anthony after the events in Juliana Park. He managed to send these over before being caught.”
“Do you know where he was?”
“Yes, but they are long gone.”
“Why would Anthony do this to his partner in crime?” she asked, tilting her head.
“God knows,” Anukh stepped in. “Maybe they were never partners. Maybe he found out who Louis really was.”
“Can you find them again? Or do I have to bring an Inner Sanctum squad over here?”
“Don’t you dare!” Anhubis said in a thundering voice, pointing a threatening finger at her. “The Inner Sanctum will not meddle on Earth. I will find them again.”
“Make sure you let me know the moment you do,” Hesrah said, her eyes boring into him.
“Won’t you be too busy guarding the portals, waiting for your precious human friend?”
His mocking smirk, more so than his sarcastic words, got to her and in a blink of an eye her fist raced through the air, connecting to his face. As he fell to the ground, she lunged and got on top of him, her fangs piercing the skin of his neck. Her nostrils flared at the spicy cologne he was wearing and she managed to squeeze a few drops of his blood before Anhubis threw her off of him. The fight would have surely escalated if Anukh wouldn’t have stepped in to stop them.
“Are you both crazy?” he hissed, a deep frown line marring his forehead. “Anhubis, you are the head of the High Council. Surely you can tell how ill-advised being inconsiderate towards humans is. And you, Hesrah! You are a part of the Inner Sanctum and your mother’s daughter. You should both be ashamed.”
When they moved away from each other, Anukh, with a half sad, half disgusted smile, said a hurried good-bye and left the room.
“If you ever talk about her like that, I will kill you with my bare hands,” Hesrah said through clenched teeth. To her, that was not a threat, it was a promise, and she suspected Anhubis knew it, as he nodded quickly and took a step back.

Border Lines

“We all remember that kid in Piccadilly. That determined look he had on his face as he willed all those people to him. Just using his mind he pulled them close then blew them all to pieces. It could be anyone. Your neighbour, your friend, your lover. Remain vigilant. Reachers are everywhere.”
When the perfect job comes up Charlie doesn’t think twice about taking it. This is the break he’s been looking for and nobody, not even the rest of his team, can persuade him otherwise.
The job means working for an old enemy and crossing the border into London. Both are risky but Charlie has no idea how high the stakes really are.
The team will have to confront their past, each other and a killer who is closer than they realise. But can they all make it out of the city alive?
This is the second installment in the Reachers series.

Interview

Hello, LE. Let’s forget the fancy author bio for a moment. Please introduce yourself in your own words.

I'm an indie author, proofreader and book enthusiast, but I'm also a mum, I work in an office and seem to have acquired more pets than I know what to do with. Most of my life revolves around books, but I also love history and travelling too.

Your first series, Dark Waters, is fantasy while your new series, The Reachers, is dystopia. Was it difficult to make the transition from fantasy to dystopia? Why the drastic change?

Dark Waters was the first time I really wanted to write for an audience rather than just for myself. I love epic fantasy and so for about five years I lived in a world of pirates and alchemy. But the writing was very dark and quite emotional at times. By the time I finished the series I was feeling pretty drained of all my creativity. I then embarked on my first self-publishing project and that was a whole new and complicated world. Then for two years I worked on getting the story out to people, so in total I lived and breathed Dark Waters for seven years.

I realised then that I had a choice, I could continue with the world (because there are more stories I could develop in that series), but I would be facing another seven years of hard labour, or I could try a change of pace for a while. I decided I loved my characters too much to abandon them, but unfortunately after a couple of months I realised that what I was doing just wasn't working for me anymore.

Luckily the idea for Reachers was already on my mind and what started as a brief break took hold. The Reacher series feels effortless to write and has really been embraced with readers. I think, despite the difference between genres, my style is consistent between both series. Both are still quite dark, have a twisted authorial voice and hopefully have strong, believable characters.

What exactly are the “Reachers”?

There are a lot of theories about what Reachers are. Some people believe they're mutations. Others believe they're fallen angels. Some think they are from out of space. But really they are just ordinary people with extraordinary powers. Their telekinetic and telepathic gifts are a threat to the government and they have been hunted so now only a few remain. But those that are alive are in hiding, constantly on the run and in fear that one day they will be captured and sent to the Institute like the rest of their kind.

Rachel is the heroine of The Running Game, the first book in The Reachers series. Tell us more about her. What sets her apart from the other people in her world? Why should we root for her?

Apart from being a Reacher, Rachel is just an ordinary girl. She's an ER doctor in a hospital with no funding. She works twelve hour shifts, six days a week and lives in constant fear of being discovered. But she's strong, she has to be, and it doesn't matter what is thrown at her she is unshakeable. At the start of The Running Game, Rachel is being hunted for her powers and the Smith brothers come to her rescue. But she's not a typical damsel in distress and she ends up helping the brothers instead.

Rachel has the ability to read people's secrets by kissing them. This power saw her sister being enslaved by ruthless criminals. But Rachel is an empowered, independent woman. She uses her power as she chooses and is always in control. Rachel is the type of heroine girls can aspire to and the type of heroine men respect.

Since this is the first book in The Reachers series, does The Running Game end with a cliffhanger?

The Running Game does not end in a cliff hanger. The ending is open for the main characters, but, without giving anything away, the plot does come full circle. There is so much to this series I try to close as many story lines as I can when I complete each book or short story.

Border Lines is the second book in The Reachers series. How much time has passed since the events in The Running Game? What changed since? Will we meet characters we already know from the first book?

There is about ten months between The Running Game and Border Lines and there is a short story which you can download for free called Family which fills in a little bit of this period without giving spoilers to either main story.

The biggest changes in the transition between the two books is that Charlie is now totally sober and Rachel is a fully fledged member of the Smith family. They are all a lot stronger and sharper and much more focused on tackling a new mission. Unfortunately for them their next job is about to turn everything upside down.

Who is Charlie? In which way is his story different than Rachel’s?

Charlie is the oldest Smith brother and also a Reacher. Unlike most Reachers, instead of running and hiding Charlie used his powers for profit. But his high profile criminal lifestyle brought tragedy into his life when the government finally caught up with him and murdered his wife. At the start of The Running Game he is a shell of his former self, practically crippled and dependent on painkillers. The Running Game sees Charlie, with Rachel's help, get a grip on his inner demons and finally make a stand to get his life back together.

Will there be a third book in The Reachers series? When should we expect it to be out?

I am currently working on the third book now and I hope to have it ready for publication this summer. There will also be lots of short stories accompanying the series which will be released throughout the year too. At the present the series is planned for a total of six books and who knows it could go even further than that.

You also offer proofreading and betareading services. How does the time management work between this and being a writer? Do you get many requests?

I've lost count of how many books and authors I've worked with over this last year, which is probably because a lot of the work I do is voluntary to support the indie community. I have had to turn people away, but most authors are happy to wait for me to have an opening in my schedule and I've been very lucky to work with some amazing people.

It is difficult managing proofing and writing, but I learn so much as a writer by reviewing other people's work. I could never give it up. I'm working on a really great project at the moment and it just makes me feel so happy knowing that I can help other authors because god knows so many have helped me over the years.

What’s next for you?

Well book three is still in draft. I'm going to be concentrating on the Reacher series for a while, mainly because it's such great fun to write. We're also going to be getting Border Lines done as an audio book too which I can't wait for. And probably I'll get to work with lots of fantastic authors in between. I'm really looking forward to this year and already it's flying by.

Excerpt
Carrying my cup of coffee, I walk back to my bedroom and look into the suitcase. So far everything looks alright—swimsuit, shorts, t-shirts, dress slacks, and dress shirt. Jules came through on her other promise to go to the store for the trip—deodorant, soap, toothpaste, condoms. Wait, condoms?!

“Jules, what the hell is this?” I ask, holding up the box of Trojans.

Not missing a beat, she grabs the box from me and throws it back in the suitcase, zipping it up. “I got everything you could possible need. Soap, toothpaste, Pepto, Pedialyte—”

“And condoms?” I ask with a raised eyebrow.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t know you had another preferred method of safe sex,” she quips as she pulls my suitcase off the bed and drags it to my front door.

“And just who do you think I’ll be having sex with?”

She shrugs as she walks back to the bedroom and shoves a pile of clothes in my arms. “I don’t know, I don’t care, but you need to get laid. So go to paradise, find some lucky woman, and get some.”

Interview

Hello, Alina. It’s nice seeing you again. Tell us what happened in the year that passed since our last interview.

Hi Ioana, hello everyone *waves* Well, it’s been a crazy year! I kept writing and had a few more stories published (or accepted), and this year seems to be crazier than the last. Book 2 and 3 of Bad Blood are coming out, plus a lot of other stories.

We’re celebrating one year since the release of your debut novel The Edge of Hope. Do vampires still rock or did we come a little too late to the party?

Oh, the party never ends for my vampires! Especially Anthony, that bad boy likes his party, even if the guests are not there willingly. Not late at all, more people join the Bad Blood family every day and it just warms my heart, to be honest. Every time someone reads and enjoys the book, I feel like I’m on top of the world.

When is the second book in the Bad Blood series coming out?

The second book in the series, The Breaking of Bonds, will be released at the end of May. Not a long wait at this point :). To be more precise, it’s May 20th.

Your short stories have been included in two Wayward Ink anthologies, Stranded and Encore.

Yes, they have! Wayward Ink has been one of those completely amazing experiences that take you by surprise and you can’t stop smiling! I only saw the submission call for Stranded two days before the deadline. Luckily for me, the description of the anthology inspired me and I just opened a blank document and started writing. The Encore short story was another one I have had a lot of fun writing. And the two WIP anthologies I skipped… well, that was because the stories they’ve inspired turned up to be too long!

I have never been as nervous as when submitting Craving Stains! Speaking of Craving Stains it has since been expanded into a novella and it will be released on April 10th.

How did this happen and why gay romance?

Like I said, luck! I was in the right group, at the right time. Clicked the right link and the submission call inspired me. As for gay romance, that’s not entirely new. One of the two free short stories I’ve released before The Edge of Blood was gay romance. I like gay fiction and gay romance, although like is a bit of an understatement. I read a lot of stories in these genres and I enjoy writing them.

How did this year change your perspective on the self-published world?

Completely and not at all! I was very reluctant to work with a publisher. Before releasing The Edge of Hope as a self-published novel, I had been offered a contract by a small publisher. I was less than pleased and decided to go my way. As far as my male-female or mainstream (if you prefer the term) titles, I am going to continue to self-publish.

All my gay fiction and gay romance titles though, those will be most surely released through WIP. We have a few stories that we’re working on, series of novels and novellas, and since the first moment of my collaboration with them, it’s been going great. I love how they nurture and encourage their authors. As someone who does not write stories that stick to rules as standards, that’s very important to me.

What’s the best thing that happened to you since becoming a published writer?

The best thing that happened is the fact I do see myself as a writer. Every day, I wake up and know this is what I’m supposed to do: write. Yes, it not just fiction, I am a freelance writer for a few online magazines, but I have finally found what I love doing most. I love books, I love reading them, and I love helping other authors promote their stories.

What’s the worst thing that happen to you since becoming a published writer?

Not enough time! There are so many stories I am currently working on. Between those, my freelance work, the book PR clients, and promoting published books, I do tend to spent 10-12 hours per day, every day, stuck to my computer and working.

You’re part of the management team of Eyes on Books where you promote indie writers. Tell us more about this adventure.

Well, it was a project I had in my head for quite a while. One day I decided to make it happen. You see, my main area of experience is PR and marketing. When I decided I was going to invest time and effort into my writing career, I tweaked my knowledge to help me better promote my books. I’ve noticed a lot of authors either did not know how to do that, or lacked the time, so I started helping them. That turned into me having paying clients and later turned into the Eyes on Books business. Although it used to have two partners, for the moment I am the only one running it and the amazing Adrian Rafail is our designer, the ones who makes all the lovely banners we use.

I know indie authors need all the support they can get, and so do published authors. Publishing houses (with few exceptions, WIP being one of them) lack the time and resources to promote all the titles they release and a lot of that work falls on the authors’ shoulders. Eyes on Books offers both paid and free services from authors. The free ones include promoting their books on our site, reviews, multi-author events on Facebook, how-to marketing and PR articles, and a section of resources that will be released soon.

Is there any chance we’re going to see your writing published in Romanian any time soon?

If you asked me this a few weeks ago I would have said no. :D A friend of mine has since offered to translate The Edge of Hope in Romanian. I honestly lack the time to do that but is she does it, then the book will be released in our mother tongue. I have no dates or concrete plans on when or how that will happen.

What do you have planned for us next?

I have a lot planned! This year will pretty much have one Alina Popescu release every month :D Or almost! Encore has hit the waves on March 20, Craving Stains will be released on April 10, The Breaking of Bonds in May (and the third book of Bad Blood sometime in November), Strength to Let Go, which is a first in a werewolf series, should be released in late June or early July, and there are plans for a few more novellas, a standalone and a series – Famous on the Internet. That’s not all, but I have to keep some surprises for later :D

Thank you, Alina, for taking the time to answer these questions. Good luck with your plans!

Thanks for having me here, Ioana! It’s always a pleasure to chat with you and your readers!
